In 1971, a group of friends decide to search for an abandoned cannabis plantation. This is based on a “treasure map” that the grower had made. The group of friends met regularly at a statue on the grounds of their school. And always at 4:20 am. When they talked about their plans, 4:20 also became the regular reference for this. After several failed attempts to find the cannabis plantation, 4:20 remained a term they used when it came to cannabis. The term became known and was quickly adopted by other young people.
