Botanical information about Tabernanthe Iboga
Our Iboga essence contains roots from Cameroon, but also grows in other West African countries such as Gabon and the greater Congo region. It is a perennial evergreen shrub native to the tropical forests of the region. It has narrow dark green leaves and clusters of white tubular flowers. The fruits are yellow and resemble chili peppers. The plant likes moist soil and partial shade.
Traditional and modern Iboga use
Ibogaine is the sacred sacrament of the Bwiti spirituality of Gabon and Cameroon. The Punu, Mitsogo and Fang tribes of Gabon and Cameroon are practitioners of Bwiti. It is traditionally an animistic religious teaching that, like many African religions, is based on ancestor worship. In modern Bwiti, they have in some cases incorporated elements of Christianity into a syncretistic system. It has probably been consumed for thousands of years in initiations and rites of passage. In smaller quantities, they use it in dance ceremonies and other more mundane religious practices.
In initiations it was used in large doses to create dissociative experiences to delve into the darker parts of former consciousness and to connect with the ancestral realm. Traditionally it has a variety of uses, from spiritual to healing pathological patterns. In modern use people see it as a useful tool for therapeutic use and to heal substance and emotional addictions.
